The New Alphabet School

Alphabets are specific kinds of phonographic sign systems built on a finite number of discrete symbols. The letters of an alphabet can be combined, creating seemingly endless possibilities for semantic and operational codings. As a universalistic matrix, subsuming any linguistic expression into one abstract system, alphabets are also imperialist infrastructures. Are algorithms, the binary code, and the information stored in DNA the alphabets of today? And what potential ways are there for re-coding such textual infrastructures?
HKW’s long-term project The New Alphabet is intended both as a diagnosis and a provocation: vernacular, opaque, or marginalized ways of knowing are increasingly subsumed into abstract universalizing structures. What strategies of resistance against such processes of forced alphabetization exist or could be developed? And which role do artistic methods of appropriation and creolization play in this context?

Edit-a-thon on the Metabolism of Bodies and Data

The workshop will engage participants in the exploration and re-editing of 3D point cloud data to create a collective un-training data set. Point clouds are sets of data points in space and can create 3D models of certain data structures for visualization and – in this workshop – imagination: In a ubiquitous testing field of mutual measuring and optimization, amplified by artificial intelligence as well as what some call artificial stupidity, this workshop takes a look into the raw data of the 3D meshes of everyday digital infrastructures. With the help of smartphones and software, sensors and senses, participants will not only scan common data, but also the complex interconnected meshes between agencies of molecular bodies, an Internet of Things, mobile phones and larger infrastructures. These scans will be captured and translated into common editable point clouds. What are the conditions of such a data set and how do they differ from traditional training data sets for AI? Which speculative and queer utopia can be produced in these assemblages and how sustainable are they?

Alphabete sind bestimmte Arten von phonografischen Zeichensystemen, die auf einer endlichen Anzahl diskreter Symbole basieren. Die Buchstaben eines Alphabets können kombiniert werden, wodurch scheinbar endlose Möglichkeiten für semantische und operative Codierungen entstehen. Als universalistische Matrix, die jeden sprachlichen Ausdruck in einem abstrakten System zusammenfasst, sind Alphabete auch imperialistische Infrastrukturen. Sind Algorithmen, der Binärcode und die in der DNA gespeicherten Informationen die Alphabete von heute? Und welche Möglichkeiten gibt es, solche Textinfrastrukturen neu zu kodieren?
Die New Alphabet School ist eine kollaborative selbstorganisierte Schule mit dem Ziel, kritische und positive Forschungspraktiken zu entwickeln. Innerhalb von drei Jahren dient es als Kolloquium, um Diskussionen zu führen und neue Ideen in den Bereichen Kunst, Archiv, Poetik und Aktivismus zu entwickeln.

Der Workshop bezieht die Teilnehmer*innen in die Generierung und Bearbeitung von 3D-Punktwolken ein, um einen kollektiven Datensatz zu erstellen. Punktwolken können 3D-Modelle bestimmter Datenstrukturen sein. In einem allgegenwärtigen Testfeld der gegenseitigen Messung und Optimierung, verstärkt durch künstliche Intelligenz sowie das, was manche als künstliche Dummheit bezeichnen, befasst sich der Workshop mit den Rohdaten der 3D-Netze alltäglicher digitaler Infrastrukturen. Mithilfe von Smartphones, Software und Sensoren scannen die Teilnehmer*Innen nicht nur gemeinsame Daten, sondern auch die komplexen, miteinander verbundenen Netze zwischen Agenturen molekularer Körper, einem Internet der Dinge, Mobiltelefonen und größeren Infrastrukturen. Diese Scans werden erfasst und in bearbeitbare Punktwolken übersetzt. Was sind die Bedingungen eines solchen Datensatzes und wie unterscheiden sie sich von herkömmlichen Datensätzen, wie Trainingsdatensätzen für KI? Welche spekulative und seltsame Utopie kann in diesen Assemblagen erzeugt werden und wie nachhaltig sind sie?
